WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s Community Bankers has formed the MBank Council to address the special issues and challenges facing minority and multi-cultural community banks and the diverse needs of their customers.

The council will be open to African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American and other multi-cultural financial institution members of ACB, including members of the former American League of Financial Institutions.

“The council will provide a unique forum for minority institutions to address issues of mutual concern and to have those issues addressed by the broader membership of ACB,” said ACB President and CEO Diane M. Casey. She urged members of ALFI to join the council, which will be part of ACB’s committee structure.

The goals of the MBank Council are to understand the priorities and needs of minority and multi-cultural institutions and to identify member products and services that bring value to these members.

The council will engage in legislative and regulatory activities that affect the ability of multi-cultural institutions to serve their customers and their communities; identify educational programs; and explore specialized products and services.

Donna Shuler, president and CEO, Independence Federal Savings Bank, Washington, D.C., will serve as the council’s chairman, and Paul Hudson, president and CEO, Broadway Federal Bank, F.S.B., Los Angeles, will serve as vice chairman.

ALFI voted during the year to dissolve the organization, which had strong ties to ACB throughout its long history.

Contacts for the council are former ALFI President Dina Curtis, who has joined ACB’s government relations department, and Priya Dayananada, who recently joined the government relations staff member from Rep. Steve Israel’s (D-N.Y.) office.
