AMERICA’S COMMUNITY BANKERS ANNOUNCES
SPONSORSHIP OF OPERATION HOPE PROGRAMS
SAN FRANCISCO — America’s Community Bankers announced today that it is sponsoring programs with Operation HOPE to help promote financial literacy in underserved communities.
The announcement was made at the national trade group’s annual convention here, which featured an address by Operation HOPE founder John Bryant. Working with local financial institutions, Operation HOPE has committed $120 million in loans since its inception 10 years ago.
A cornerstone of Operation HOPE is its financial literacy program for children, “Banking on Our Future.” The curriculum teaches kids such financial basics as handling checking and savings accounts and building and managing credit. “Our most ambitious mandate is teaching every child in America economic literacy by the time they finish eighth grade,” Bryant told bankers.
“ACB has made fostering financial literacy a top priority, and is delighted to be working with Operation HOPE to promote programs to bankers and to enlist bankers’ participation in their local communities,” said ACB president and CEO Diane M. Casey. Operation HOPE is distributing materials from ACB’s Money Rules outreach program, and ACB in turn is participating in Banking on Our Future activities.
On Nov. 19, Casey will participate in Operation HOPE’s “economic literacy marathon” by teaching a Banking on Our Future course in a Washington, D.C., public school. Another “celebrity CEO teacher” participating in the event will be FDIC Chairman Donald E. Powell, Bryant said. The teach-in is taking place in five metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, San Francisco/Oakland, Chicago, New York, and Washington.
America’s Community Bankers is the national trade association committed to shaping the future of
banking by being the innovative industry leader strengthening the competitive position of
community banks. To learn more about ACB, visit
