TERRORISM, MONEY LAUNDERING EXPERTS, KEY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, HEADLINE ACB’S ANNUAL CONVENTION IN NEW ORLEANS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedy, America’s Community Bankers’ has added to its 2001 Annual Convention program an internationally known expert on terrorism and a key government official on money laundering. The convention will be held Nov. 4-7 at the Hilton Riverside Hotel, New Orleans.

The terrorism expert is Richard G. McCormick, vice president, Pinkerton/Business Risks International. The money laundering official is expected to be from the Treasury Department.

In addition, the program includes several banking regulators, key government and former government officials, top officials of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and a nationally known economist.

An estimated 1,500 bankers, directors, spouses and exhibitors are expected to attend the convention, one of the largest gatherings of community bank executives in the country.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, ACB members will participate in a Habitat for Humanity build to help a New Orleans family fulfill the dream of homeownership. Jack Kemp, founder of Empower America and a board member of Habitat for Humanity International, will address bankers on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Bankers will hear from House Financial Institutions Subcommittee Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.); FDIC Chairman Donald E.Powell and Board Member John Reich; Office of Thrift Supervision Director Ellen Seidman; Fannie Mae Vice Chairman Jamie Gorelick; Freddie Mac Chairman and CEO Leland Brendsel; and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Martin Regalia.

ACB will have a fully equipped convention newsroom. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day for registered press. Press credentials will be required for admission to all events. Reporters can pick up badges and press packets from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4; and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5 and Tuesday, Nov. 6. All of the general and concurrent sessions are open to the press.
