WASHINGTON, D.C. — Debra Cope, a veteran banking journalist, has been named director of publishing for America’s Community Bankers, including publisher of its flagship Community Banker magazine and supervisor of its other periodical publications and newsletters. She begins work on October 22.

“We are extremely pleased to have a person of Debra’s experience and reputation joining ACB to lead our publications staff,” said ACB President and CEO Diane M. Casey. “Debra will take us to the next level, enhancing the award-winning quality of the publications our community bank members value for information.”

Cope joins ACB from Bloomberg News’ Washington bureau where she managed a team of banking editors and reporters. Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2000, she had a 10-year career with the American Banker newspaper in New York and Washington. She began with the newspaper in 1990 as a Washington correspondent. From 1996-2000, she was the financial daily’s executive editor in New York and Washington.

Cope established the Washington bureau of the National Mortgage News in 1987. Prior to that, she was a staff writer for BNA’s Banking Report, a legislative writer for the National Association of Home Builders and a staff writer for the American Bankers Association.

Cope was part of a team receiving the George Polk Award for Financial Reporting in 1988. She was awarded a journalists’ fellowship at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking in 1992.
