Statement by Diane M. Casey, president and CEO, America’s Community Bankers, on House passage today by voice vote of H.R. 1009, a bill to give banks the option of paying interest on business checking accounts and allow the Federal Reserve System to pay interest on sterile reserves:

The House demonstrated again today that it’s about time we repeal a Depression-era law that is outdated and no longer useful. For the second time this Congress, the House has overwhelmingly passed a bill to give banks the option of paying interest on business checking accounts, providing meaningful and measurable benefits to small businesses.

America’s Community Bankers has been the champion of removing the ban on paying interest on business checking accounts since bringing the issue to Congress in 1995. We are already working with the Senate Banking Committee to move a bill to final enactment and President Bush’s signature.

America’s Community Bankers is the national trade association committed to shaping the future of banking by being the innovative industry leader strengthening the competitive position of community banks. To learn more about ACB, visit www.AmericasCommunityBankers.com.
