MEDIA ADVISORY – TREASURY, HUD SECRETARIES, OTHER KEY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO ADDRESS ACB’S GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS CONFERENCE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Community bankers from across the country will hear the secretaries of Treasury and Housing and Urban Development and other key government officials and carry America’s Community Bankers’ priority government affairs issues to Capitol Hill and the regulatory agencies at ACB’s annual Government Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., March 14-16.

Speakers include: Treasury Secretary John Snow; Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson; House Financial Services Committee Chairman Michael Oxley (R-Ohio); Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the committee’s ranking Democrat; Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), the Senate Banking Committee’s ranking Democrat; Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and Thomas Carper (D-Del.), both members of the Senate Banking Committee; Ronald Rosenfeld, chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board; Cynthia Glassman, commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission; William Fox, director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network; Lydia Parnes, acting director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission; Richard Riccobono of the Office of Thrift Supervision; and Michael Zamorski of the FDIC.

The Mutual Community Bank Conference on Monday, March 14, and the first day of the Government Affairs Conference on Tuesday, March 15, will take place at the Fairmont Hotel, 2401 M St., N.W. On Wednesday, March 16, the conference will be held in the Columbus Club at Union Station.

ACB Chairman Harry P. Doherty, vice chairman, Independence Community Bank Corp., Brooklyn, N.Y., will open the conference and ACB President and CEO Diane Casey-Landry will brief delegates on ACB’s priority issues and give them a send off to meet with their representatives and senators.

ACB’s priority government relations issues include: regulatory relief, credit union regulation and taxation, Social Security reform, regulation of the Federal Home Loan Bank System, mission and regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, regulatory capital requirements and bankruptcy reform. ACB Government Affairs Council Chairman Arthur R. Connelly, chairman and CEO, South Shore Savings Bank, South Weymouth, Mass., will preside at the meeting.

Conference sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, March 14; 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15; and 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16.
