WASHINGTON, D.C. — The base compensation of community bank chief executives averaged $164,648 this year, an increase of about 8 percent, according to the most comprehensive source of data and policies on compensation among community banks, America’s Community Bankers’ 2000 Compensation Survey. The average compensation in 1999 was $150,887.

Among CEOs, average compensation ranged from $78,128 for institutions with less than $50 million in assets to $325,345 for institutions with more than $1 billion in assets. The average compensation for CEOs in metropolitan areas was $181,532. Stock institution CEOs averaged a base salary of $187,501. Among mutual institutions, the average was $135,310. In part, the difference reflects average asset size differences. Overall, bank staff salaries increased by an average of 3.92 percent in 2000.

Outside directors’ compensation averaged $13,900, ranging from $6,311 at institutions with less than $50 million in assets to $24,204 at institutions with more than $1 billion in assets.

The publication includes compensation information on more than 140 positions at community banks, in five ways: nationwide, seven asset size categories, nine geographic regions, a combined group of 52 metropolitan areas, and type of charter. This year’s survey includes special white papers on compensation issues and an appendix presents a finer breakdown of the smallest asset category for the five highest paid employees.

The survey is available as a 440-page manual or on a searchable CD-ROM, or as a discounted combined package. To order, visit www.AmericasCommunityBankers.com or call (202) 857-3119.
