PRESIDENT BUSH APPLAUDS COMMUNITY BANKERS FOR “GETTING BACK TO BUSINESS”
NEW ORLEANS — President Bush applauded America’s Community Bankers today for responding to his call “to help defeat the terrorists’ attempt to harm the American way of life by getting back to business.”
His remarks were presented to community bankers attending ACB’s annual convention here — as scheduled — by Dr. Philippa Malmgren, a member of the president’s economic adviser staff, who was directed by Bush to personally deliver the president’s “warmest greetings” to the more than 1,800 participants of the convention.
“Our economy has suffered as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks,” the president said. “One of my administration’s priorities is to provide stimulus for our economy. I believe that can be done best through tax relief.”
Bush said tax relief can work quickly to help consumers and entrepreneurs. “Tax relief will improve incentives to save and invest and will give a powerful boost to our national economy.”
The president said tax relief is more efficient than spending because it lets individuals decide what they need most and will expand productive investment.
“I was pleased to receive America’s Community Bankers’ letter supporting my economic stimulus package,” the president said. “I understand that America’s Community Bankers is actively supporting this package, and I appreciate your efforts.”
“You are not just community lenders, you are community leaders. Knowing your long history of attempting to help provide Americans economic freedom and the single greatest symbol of that freedom, a home of their own, I salute you for your efforts.”
