SAN FRANCISCO IS SITE FOR LARGE GATHERING
OF COMMUNITY BANKERS AT ACB’S 2002 ANNUAL CONVENTION
WASHINGTON, D.C. — San Francisco will host one of the nation’s largest gatherings of bankers when America’s Community Bankers convenes its annual convention there Nov. 3-6. An estimated 2,000 bankers, directors, spouses and exhibitors are expected to attend the national event at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel.
“Community Bank Leaders in Action” is the theme of this year’s convention. The conference will focus on major issues facing community bankers today, including improving the bottom line, innovations in technology, new marketing techniques, leadership challenges, and changes in legislation and regulation.
Bankers will hear from FDIC Chairman Donald Powell, Comptroller of the Currency John Hawke, Office of Thrift Supervision Director James Gilleran, Kerry Killinger, chairman, president and CEO, Washington Mutual Bank, Seattle, the nation’s largest savings institution, and John Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, a group providing financial services and economic literacy programs to inner city residents. Improving financial literacy is a priority for ACB and community bankers.
ACB and its Housing Partners Foundation, the awarding-winning spouses’ philanthropic organization, will celebrate 12 years of giving back to convention cities by joining with Habitat for Humanity’s San Francisco affiliate to sponsor a Habitat build.
ACB members and spouses will help construct a unique eight-unit condominium project in downtown San Francisco. This will serve as a Habitat prototype to develop affordable housing in high-cost urban areas. The build is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, the day before the convention officially opens. At ACB’s 2001 convention, members helped build a Habitat house in New Orleans.
A one-day Directors’ Forum, focusing on critical issues facing trustees and directors of community banks, is scheduled for Nov. 3. The forum was created by ACB with the National Association of Corporate Directors and the Office of Thrift Supervision.
ACB’s highly regarded and sold-out business show, the Market Expo, will feature more than 100 exhibitors, offering a full array of products and services for financial institutions. ACB Partners, Inc., ACB’s for-profit subsidiary, will make several presentations of joint “mortgage solutions” with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Countrywide Home Loans, Principal Residential Mortgage and MortgageRamp.
During convention sessions, delegates will be discussing such key issues as new disclosure and corporate governance requirements; implementation of Federal Home Loan Bank System capital plans; strategic financial technology planning; the impact of Patriot Act requirements; and strategic decisions for mutual institutions.
Also addressing the convention will be ACB Chairman Curtis L. Hage, chairman and CEO, Home Federal Bank, Sioux Falls, S.D.; incoming ACB Chairman D. Russell Taylor, president and CEO, Rahway (N.J.) Savings Institution; and ACB President and CEO Diane M. Casey.
ACB will have a fully equipped convention newsroom. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day for registered press.
Registration for working press is complimentary. For registration materials, please call Bob Schmermund, Jim Eberle or Josh Shusko at (202) 857-3100.
