SAN FRANCISCO — Members of America’s Community Bankers are living up to their name by devoting substantial amounts of time and other resources to community service, according to a spot news poll released today at the opening of the national trade group’s annual convention here.

Fully half of community bank presidents and CEOs personally devote 11 hours or more a month to nonprofits and other local organizations, according to an overnight fax poll sent to all ACB members. Twenty-one percent put in more than 20 hours a month on nonprofit boards and in volunteer roles.

The vast majority of community banks — 90 percent — support six or more nonprofit community organizations, with a whopping 73 percent supporting 11 or more, the poll found.

Presidents and CEOs of the smallest banks — those with assets of $100 million or less — play an outsized part in their communities, with 55 percent personally giving at least 11 hours a month to nonprofit boards or other volunteer activities. Sixty-five percent said their banks provide support to at least six nonprofits.

“The poll results underscore how community bankers play a major role in the economic development and social well-being of our communities,” said ACB Chairman Curtis L. Hage, who is chairman and CEO, Home Federal Bank, Sioux Falls, S.D.

The trade group is meeting here through Wednesday.
