Statement by Diane M. Casey, president and CEO, America’s Community Bankers, regarding today’s announcement by the Office of Thrift Supervision of its restructuring plan:

America’s Community Bankers is pleased that OTS has formally announced its restructuring plan to the public and to the CEOs of all OTS-regulated institutions. Our initial concern has been that bankers needed to know what was going on and why, as quickly as possible. Today’s announcement is a good first step. We also support agency efforts to balance its budget and maintain stable assessment costs for institutions over the near term.

ACB will be discussing changes resulting from this plan at our upcoming board meeting later this month. Issues that will be discussed include the possible impact on the over 300 institutions currently in the Chicago and Dallas regions that will be transferred to other regions. The effects of the new pilot to conduct combined safety and soundness and compliance exams will be considered seriously.

ACB is committed to working with OTS and shares its goal of having a strong, flexible charter and an efficient, effective and independent regulator; it’s good for thrifts and the entire banking industry.
