AMERICA’S COMMUNITY BANKERS’ MAGAZINE
DOES DOUBLE TAKE WITH SPANISH LANGUAGE COVER
WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s Community Bankers’ magazine, Community Banker, did a double take with its November issue by printing the cover in Spanish to promote a feature article on banking services for Hispanics. A second inside cover followed in English.
“We took a new approach with this month’s cover to help convey how it feels to confront an unfamiliar language. Disorienting. Confusing. Frustrating,” said Debra Cope, the magazine’s publisher, in an explanation to readers.
The cover story, “Talking the Same Language: Banking Services for Spanish Speakers,” grew out of hearing from members about the challenges posed by changing demographics, said Cope. “Many bankers, seeing the perplexed faces of immigrants in their lobbies, have responded with creative and innovative programs that have helped transform banks and communities,” she said.
“Bankers report that the Spanish-language market has become a crucial one,” said Cope. “Banks that offer financial literacy programs (such as those offered by ACB and the FDIC), bilingual staff, Spanish-language services and niche products are reaping the benefits.
“Our cover story outlines what’s at stake for bankers, and is rich with examples of how community banks are expanding to successfully serve these new consumers.”
Cope said that over the next year, the magazine will feature stories on banking trends among African-Americans and Asian-Americans.
