Statement by Diane Casey-Landry, president and CEO, America’s Community Bankers, on the draft government sponsored enterprises bill proposed by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.):

America's Community Bankers congratulates Chairman Shelby for proposing well-crafted GSE legislation. It is a thoughtful bill that will implement the major elements of ACB’s own blueprint for reform offered last fall. The time is now for creation of a world-class, independent regulator for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks.

ACB members are key stakeholders in this effort and have an intense interest in preserving and enhancing the important functions of the FHLBank System, and of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well. ACB supports the bill’s various provisions to maintain Fannie and Freddie in their secondary market role, and to preserve the cooperative nature of the FHLBank System.

Time is of the essence. ACB pledges to work with the committee and Congress to move the legislation expeditiously this year.

America’s Community Bankers is the national trade association committed to shaping the future of banking by being the innovative industry leader strengthening the competitive position of community banks. To learn more about ACB, visit www.AmericasCommunityBankers.com.
