Statement by Diane Casey-Landry, president and CEO, America’s Community Bankers, on the resolution introduced in the House today calling for inclusion of a community bank option in Social Security legislation:

America’s Community Bankers commends Reps. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) and Tom Feeney (R-Fla.) on their introduction of the resolution to include a community bank option in Social Security reform legislation. The nation’s community bankers are ready, willing and able to provide working Americans with a Social Security investment alternative to investing in stocks and bonds. We strongly urge all House members to vote for this resolution.

Community banks can be a critical part of Social Security reform. With the ability to offer a safe, insured savings alternative for private accounts, community banks can provide customers a secure, risk-free option. Community bankers also know their customers and can answer investment questions and provide advice on appropriate bank products.

In a broader sense, the community bank option will have positive effects well beyond helping workers get a better return on their Social Security accounts. Money deposited in a community bank goes to work for the entire community with loans to help businesses and organizations grow and prosper.

America’s Community Bankers is the national trade association committed to shaping the future of banking by being the innovative industry leader strengthening the competitive position of community banks. To learn more about ACB, visit www.AmericasCommunityBankers.com.
