ACB LAUDS SEN. GRAMM’S SERVICE IN GOVERNMENT
Statement by Diane M. Casey, president and CEO, America’s Community Bankers, on Sen. Phil Gramm’s retirement from Congress:
Phil Gramm is a tough, effective legislator who leaves his mark especially on the financial services industry. His name is first on the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act because he had the tenacity and the political skills to push the bill through to enactment. Others tried for more than two decades, but Phil Gramm succeeded. The law that he brought about is the most sweeping modernization of the financial services industry since the 1930s.
Phil Gramm will also be remembered for his leadership in matters of fiscal responsibility: requiring the government to curb spending and making Congress live within a budget, and cutting tax rates to restore incentives.
For a person in politics, Phil Gramm has an unbelievable willingness to speak his mind. You always know where he stands and, as a man of principle, he’s not afraid to embrace unpopular positions. His candor will be missed in this city and the in halls of Congress.
