WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s Community Bankers said today it strongly supports a bill introduced in the House to indemnify banks that cash checks for Hurricane Katrina and Rita survivors. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.).

The Hurricane Check Cashing Relief Act would provide indemnification for bad checks of up to $2,000 that were cashed for evacuees without proper identification in the initial disaster areas as well as areas where hurricane survivors were relocated. The program would extend through Oct. 31, and would be funded with Federal Reserve System surplus funds, not taxpayer money.

“While banks are already extending a helping hand to survivors of the hurricanes by cashing checks for customers and noncustomers alike, there is a need for banks to be made whole for any losses that are incurred for doing the right thing,” said Diane Casey-Landry, president and CEO of ACB. “We thank Congresswoman Brown-Waite for introducing this bill and urge Congress to act quickly to enact this legislation.”
